British Housing is rubbish

  • I agree with 90% of this thread. I believe that the changing shape of new builds i.e size and layout is purely down to family breakdown/change in demographic. OK there is alot more to it than just that, but I believe (and I did a degree in it) that this is the main reason why we have the homes we do now.

The property developers wouldnt build these places if there wasnt a need for them. You only have to look at housing types historically i.e. people have mentioned big 1930s 'family' housing compared to smaller modern properties. Smaller property for smaller family units.

I disagree somewhat that its purely down to that. I'm sure The 'young professionals' (euw I hate that term) singles, divorcees and unconventional families that the stingily proportioned new builds are marketed towards would much prefer to have a bit more space inside and out and not have to climb over their neighbour to get in the front door

Guidance issued by the govt since the recent proposals, suggest that the local councils are being ENCOURAGED to allow ppl to build their own homes, thus meaning, more ppl shud get the permission to build on their own plots.

"Mrs. Pench, you've won the car contest, would you like a triumph spitfire or 3000 in cash?" He smiled.
Mrs. Pench took the money. "What will you do with it all? Not that it's any of my business," he giggled.

So it seems that if you want to do it, you can. You just need the will.

Apparently IKEA are starting to do houses in the UK (they sell around 800 per year in Sweden). They reckon they will be able to hit the £100,000 price point for a flat and £150,000 for a 3 bed house even in the Southeast. They are like a budget version of a Huff house in that they are made in a factory and joined together on-site. Apparently they will include IKEA kitchens and bathrooms etc.

Be interesting to see how this develops. Here's an article from the end of last year http://business.guardian.co.uk/story/0,,1961670,00.html.

I would love a house like that!
Or like this, currently for sale in Colorado for £125,000. I love the Earthship design and they are basically carbon-neutral once built. Unfortunately not many councils wil give planning permission for something so radically different to the traditional "box".
