Sony don't have to do anything, the contract is with the retailer.

Where did he buy it from?
  • i Do not know, but i think he dealt with sony when it went the first time, would it be to late to take it back to the retailer now,

Do electrical products have a 5 year warranty on them

You would need to prove , via an independant expert report, that the fault was inherent.
As you then dealt with Sony, you might well have lost the right with the retailer.
No, electrical goods dont have to have a 5 year warranty, most are 12 months or 2 years at the very most.

It is most unlikely that there is a five year warranty in place.
You will need to read the warranty documentation to find out.

If there is no warranty in place, then you either accept Sony's offer or turn you attention to the retailer.

Did you son pay by credit card?
If so, the card issuer may also have a responsibility.

I think you've shot yourself in the foot when you bypassed the retailer in the first instance. I am unsure if the retailer will be responsible for a reconditioned PS3 you obtained from the manufacturer.

Just leave it and get a PS4 in a couple of months!

How do you prove the fault is inherent as the product sold by the retailer is not the product the OPs son is having problems with?
