Another reason not to use Microsoft products such as Windows or IE. You are usually much safer with open source software and Linux based operating systems such as the excellent Linux Mint. For browsing the internet Firefox and Google chrome tend to have less security problems than IE in my experience.
To improve security on all three browsers see this article

the longer the code, the easier it is to exploit/more likely it is to be exploited, applies to all browsers and Os's

Yes you're mistaken. The article says this is a zero day vulnerability. It's nothing to do with any virus.

The usual way malware and viruses get installed is by the user actually installing them in error although it is possible to suffer a "drive-by" infection just by visiting a hacked web page.

If a Windows machine is left with no firewall at all (ie on a modem rather than a router and with even the Windows inbuilt firewall disabled) it is reckoned it will be infected with something or other in very short order. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/08/19/infected_in20_minutes/ - is about XP but I doubt later versions would fare that much better.

Either way the article is about a specific code vulnerability in IE which has existed for years but only just been discovered. There have been umpteen previous vulnerabilities and will doubtless be umpteen more discovered in future.

It tends to be sensationalised more when the product is MS.
