Just received a random text message from a 0800 number saying 'Please call GVI on 08004046601' should I phone?
Logic is sceaming: If it was important they would phone me.

I wouldn't, although I'd be tempted to report it, I think it may come under Ofcom's juristiction. Unsolicited texts are illegal.

If you do phone, do a 141 and preferably not from your mobile. Also don't give any details they don't already have. If you want to really get down to why they texted you, MAYBE give them your mobile number that they've already texted but nothing else, definitely not your name or address. If they're legitimate they should already know. If they want to confirm who you are they can just phone your mobile."She is quite the oddball. What is with people having to find out who rang, who texted etc. If they want you they'll call again .
I used to get prank phone calls and try to be careful who has my number.0 -
141 does not work when calling an 0800 number. The caller's identity is always given. Best to call from a public phone.
A little more investigation shows this number belongs to Global Vantage India. They appear to have something to do with MBNA defaulted credit card agreements.
Could this be why they are calling you?Don't lie, thieve, cheat or steal. The Government do not like the competition.

As was mentioned in the other thread, why on Earth would they be texting your mobile? To be honest I don't think any bank, building society, credit card company etc even have my mobile number. Sounds completely like a scam if that's an organisation's first point of contact. It wouldn't surprise me if they've been contracted for debt recovery and they're just doing massive "mail shots" to get people's details and anyone who has similar name or address to anyone on their list of debtors they then stick with the debt. Saw a Watchdog a while ago about debt collection agencies who basically just try and find anyone near enough matching the name alone and just hound that person and they don't care how much proof you have that you aren't that person, even down to name being spelled differently."She is quite the oddball. I’m with Al Mac on this. Just ignore it and forget it. If it is important they will contact you again.
Do the same with any unknown calls or texts. They are just junk.0 -

I agree, if it was me I'd ignore and more probably if I was feeling particularly obstinate then I'd follow through with reporting it. For example I've had about eight silent phone calls this week from CPP (autodialler jobby). I could probably phone the 0845 number they suggest to ask for them to remove my detials and not to call again. But instead I've spent probably more time reporting almost every call to Ofcom. Me and my principles!"She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"
