Where to buy real Oak furniture

We are looking to buy a considerable amount of furniture over the next couple of months and have been considering Oak Furniture Land. Their prices are really good but I am not confident in the quality due to the number of negative reviews they have flying around the website.

The furniture we are looking for is as follows:

1) Coffee Table with Drawers
2) Extendable Dining Table (with or without chairs)
3) Double Bed
4) 4 x Bedside Drawers
5) Sideboard

We priced this lot up at Oak Furniture Land and it came to around £2000 so it's an awful lot of money if we end up with shoddy furniture.

If anyone can recommend another company that does good quality oak furniture, I would very much appreciate it.

Does it have to be brand new furniture? If not then AUCTION!!!

All of our furniture is antique, and most of it has cost us pennies - you can pick up fantastic solid oak furniture from auction for literally pennies (once bought a solid 1930s oak table for 60pence, and have had numerous items for which we've had change from a five pound note).

If you're prepared to spend a little time sanding off dodgy or dark finishes, and waxing in the colour of your choice, you can have a house full of really beautiful and individual furniture for a ridiculously small amount of money.

Thanks for your recommendation, however, with furniture auctions, we would need to be able to transport the furniture which unfortunately isn't an option, so we'd need to buy from somewhere that offers delivery.

With the auctions around here, you don't need to take furniture away on the actual day of the sale, so perhaps if you were to consider this then you might be able to arrange transport somehow (Man with a van etc)?

Totally appreciate it if you really have no option on this, but it's always worth a shot! :D
  • Totally in agreement with Dukesy! With the savings you'd make from going to an auction, you'd more than have enough to hire a man with a van for a day to pick it all up and still have money left over.

Not to mention that that way you'll be able to see the pieces in person and check their quality. I would be wary about buying over the internet, especially for such a large amount of money and from a website with bad reviews.

Even if you don't go for the auction route, I'd still suggest you go somewhere else. If they have bad reviews, I would avoid buying anything you can't first see in person. Are there no oak furniture shops near you? I know where I am there are quite a few shops that specialise in Oak Furniture and offer delivery if you can't personally pick it up. Might be worthwhile seeing if there are any of these in your area :)

I have seen this range in a small farm shop and can vouch for its quality. the prices are way below what the shop was chargeing.

B and M shops currrenty sell some oak items which I am certain are the exact same, ie, the coffee table with drawer is £99 in the shop.

Would you believe, there's an Oak Furniture showroom literally just round the corner from where I live and I never even knew it was there :)

Thanks for the suggestion of the auctions too, I will definitely make enquiries.

I would recommend the Next Cambridge Oak Collection. I have a few good pieces of living room furniture from them, it's Lithuanian Oak, and is excellent quality, it polishes really well with proper wood polish. It is expensive, you can usually see it on display in the bigger Next stores, and the delivery was really good!

You can tell the quality of the wood from the weight of it! It's heavy to move!

I have the three door sideboard, the console bookcase, coffee table, nest of tables and TV cabinet. My mother actually bought them and joked I could have them when she died... she did 2 years later! The pieces are now about 6 years old, and NEXT still sell the same range, so must say something about how popular the collection is!
  • We treated ourselves to some oak furniture, which came from a workshop intriguingly called Village Pine www.villagepine.co.uk
No connections other than being a very happy owner - bed, chests, wardrobe - all solid and well made.
Had we been more moneysaving, we'd have gone down the auction route, but we were young & it never occured to us!
  • I bought this coffee table last month: (devonshirepineandoak.co.uk/product/coffee-table-dt15a-2335884)
Decent price, I think. It was delivered by a local company called "Furniture Plus".
More than happy with the service and now I know where my local centre is, so I can pop in and see what else they have to match.
