How do I make my network secure?

I have a windows vista laptop which I've set up to my wireless router. But it says Security Type: Unsecured. How do I change this?
BTW, I've tried to find this information (security) on my PC that's using the same wireless connection, but alas.
I see I have accidently picked up my neighbours signal and I can see that they are secure. Maybe I should ask them how they did it. Or maybe not - lol!
Cheers!

You need to login to the router and turn on wireless security there first.

Open your browser and type 192.168.1.254 ( if that doesn't work, try 192.168.1.1) into the URL and hit return. You should be asked for a User ID and Password the defaults of which according to this model's spec are Administrator (try admin if that doesn't work) and no password required.
This should get you into the router's administration pages. Look in the menus for the page dealing with Wireless Security settings. For Authentication Type you want to select WPA2-PSK and for Encryption you want to select AES.
If you don't already have one, you should see a field to set up a Wireless Password (also known as a Wireless Key). You should have a password that none of your neighbours could possibly guess, and just as important, you need to make sure you never forget it because this is the password needed to connect any PC or other wireless device like a Kindle to your now secured network.... [STRIKE]Type 192.168.1.254 into the address bar of your web browser (e.g. Internet Explorer) and press Enter.
That should bring up the router login page.[/STRIKE]

New problem... I've made my network secure but I've forgotten the password and now cannot get on the internet.0

Assuming it's the wifi password you've lost, a couple of things to try:
1. Use/borrow/buy a short ethernet patch cable and connect your laptop directly to the router with it. Log back in to the router to check the wifi password (if displayed).
2. Reset the router back to factory default using the reset button - (CAUTION: this may cause more problems than it solves if you do not know how to reconfigure your router with your ISP settings).604!0 -

Can you not set a new password as I described in #4 ?... DaveHappily retired and enjoying my 14th year of leisureI am cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.Bring me sunshine in your smile0 -

There's no option to put in a new password. Or any password

Is it best to contact my provider to walk me through it? since it was them who gave me the wireless router.0 -
Yeah!!!!!! I've made my network secure and found the password. But... I can only access the internet using the AOL 9.6 browser. None other will work and keep getting HTTP 404 Not Found all the time.
Any ideas how to fix this?
