Selling a car without MOT/Tax

I am considering buying a new car to replace my trusty Toyota Corolla which will be used as part-ex.
Together with the Corolla I am also thinking about part-exing my Dad's Fiat Panda which was passed down to me after he sadly died.

The thing I am wondering about though is what to do with the Panda as the MOT and Tax have since lapsed (parked on drive). It has always been a good runner so there shouldn't be much of an issue of it failing it's MOT but am I OK to drive the car to the garage if the MOT is way out of date (about 3 months) , providing of course I get myself insured temporarily on it?

Do car dealers look favorably to 2 cars part-ex'd for 1 of theirs or is a sale a sale to them?

  • Whats the Panda worth all done? Is it a new or old style Panda?

you can drive a untax'd unMOT'd car to a pre-booked MOT centre providing its roadworthy, ie I would at least check the brakes work ok and its not obviously falling part.

1 day insurance can be bought on the interweb for £20 ish....or you could ask the garage if they would collect it on trade plates or something.

As for part exchanging 2 cars for one, that would be down the to trader to say and give you "his" value on them, which would be a lot less than selling privately but a lot less hassle for you.

  • Px'ing a car with no MOT will probably get you a bag of buttons / scrap price at the most. you'd be better putting that one on eBay on for spares or repair and starting it at scrap price.
No need to get insured on it and no need to drive it anywhere. Although you'd probably get more money if you took it for an MOT, if it passes you can sell it for more, if it fails then you're £30 down.
  • Thanks for replies

Panda is a new style model (2005 IIRC) and very low mileage so it looks like it might be worth about £2K - £2.5K.

I was under the impression a car needed to MOT'd to drive on the road so not worrying about that is good to know. I will get it booked in and get some temp cover.
  • As long as you pre-book the MOT and you drive straight there, then you will be fine if you are stopped, assuming your taking to a close MOT centre.

Make sure the insurance covers you for a car in someone elses name. As mentioned a pre-booked MOT with a direct route to there from the keepers address and back no problem.

Have you or anyone else SORN'd the car? No TAX, or Insurance and it should be SORN'd.

    Yup car has been SORN'd.
As to insurance I was under the impression I need to get temp cover on this specific car as there is nobody insured on it all at the mo so I can't have it covered on my standard fully comp policy.

If you have a local garage, they may for a small fee collect the car, mot it and return it.

If the car needs work, they could do it(if you don't do the repairs yourself) and it comes back to you will a new mot, ready for sale.

Might work out cheaper than getting temp insurance, as you may need to bring it home after the mot and then take it for repairs and collect on different days.

My policy now states i am only covered to driver other cars if that vehicle is also insured.

So yes a separate extension to cover that car would need to be made or a temporary policy.

Usually its cheaper to get the garage to collect, MOT it and and deliver it back home.
