my son want to do a bit of gaming mainly 2D stuff and minecraft

I went into pc world and we told this £349 would be good along with an extra £189 for cloud... it would improve gaming.. my son would only use it the odd time as he Xbox's and I don't intend to buy pc games for it... do I need cloud or am I being ripped off?

    £189 for what, this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/knowhow-cloud-1315-commercial.html?

ripped off - for backup, you can use a portable hard disk (about £40), and dvd's costing about 10p, if you don't have a backup drive already

What machines do you have already, and which laptop are you looking at?

£189 for 'cloud'?? The term itself means next to nothing, in no case can it improve gaming performance, so not sure what you're being sold. Whatever it is, you almost certainly don't need or want it.
  • Steer clear of whatever it is, you certainly do not be needing to shelling out your hard earned cash for something that you do not need.

As Closed said, what is the model of the laptop that you were looking at?
Folks on here will be able to advise if a good or bad buy, and give you different alternatives.

If you do want to use the Cloud to backup, there are free alternatives which will give you a fair bit of storage and still allow you to share files with friends etc.

Only cloud that would improve gaming would be the cloud gaming like OnLive.
But its still quite limited, and i doubt thats what PC world are trying to sell

And do yourself another favour and buy your laptop from anywhere but PCW. They're notorious for selling overpriced add-ons that you don't need.
Indeed, that's where they make most of their margin.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
