Bad Smell from Utilities Section and just seen a Mouse!

We created a new extension 3 months back into the side part of the garden to create a bigger kitchen/utility area.

Since moving back into the house a few occasions there has been a strong smell behind the washing machine.

At first I suspected the waste pipe of the wachine machine pushed to deep into the waste pipe outlet, which I rectified.

Since then we haven't had a bad smell running through the house however the area of the washing machine has a very nasty smell coming from the back and confined to that area.

Today my misses saw a mouse in the morning near the washing machine so were suspecting the smell may be related to the mice.

What could we do to A) eliminate the mice B) Get to the source of the smell?

  • What bait/Traps are most affective?
SO many out there with different reviews...

House is absolutely clean. We have tile floors and maybe the underfloor heating is attracting the pests?

Best bait for mice.....Nutella. Without doubt. Its almost magnetic for mice :)
  • Go outside and inspect your extension carefully for small gaps. Fill any that you find.

We had mice in our old house until one day I noticed the doors in the extension had 1cm gaps under the frames - into the underfloor space. Sealed the gaps up - next autumn no more mice!

Not sure about the smell - drains maybe. Does the washing machine pipe have a u bend?
  • I have found no gaps from the outside of the property however they may be coming from the basement...

With regards to the U Bend, none is present.
Tehy have simply just put the drains pipe from the washing machine into the waste outlet ....

If the smell makes you wrinkle your nose and smells like excreta, it's drains, if it makes you want to heave your guts up, dead mouse or rat.

Please use the instant death traps and not the sticky paper ones.

  • We had a terrible problem with mice. Traps - yes. We also put mouse proof mesh over all our airbricks. No problem since.

Into what waste outlet? WM needs a water seal on the waste that can either be provided via connecting into the sink waste above the trap or its own dedicated trap.
