How common is having to sign on every week rather than every 2 weeks? (under 25)

My daughter's "advisor" makes her come to sign on every week.
That perticular advisor was off for a bit, my daughter signed on with another one and got a next date for 2 weeks later with the other advisor saying all "her" people sign on every 2 weeks and that the advisor my daughter is assigned to is the only one in the whole JC that makes people sign on every week.

Is there any guidance on that please?

My daughter is not well, the bullying tactics of this advisor are stressing her and making her feel much worse.

The "advisor" also emails her almost every day with 20-30 links to jobs and asking my daughter to apply for them all.

Is this normal?

Thanks a lot.

  • Unfortunately, it may well be within the rules especially as the government wanted to introduce this across the board a few months ago. The JC can get away with a lot of things that would be considered as harassment in any other walk of life. Nevertheless, I would advise your daughter to seek help from the family doctor to monitor the situation. The JC still have a duty of care to clients and this could still come under Health and Safety if your daughter is suffering ill-health through stress. You could complain to the JC manager through the usual channels but like as not, it will probably be treated as unsympathetically as any other complaint so it would be better to have your GP onboard.

In answer to your last question...no, it is not normal but given the variable attitudes by JC advisers, it is difficult to know what normal really is.
  • my daughters friend is 21 and she has to sign on, on a weekly basis.
shes even had to do it on a saturday morning. ( i didnt even think the job centre were open then.)
    credit card bill. £0.00
    overdraft £0.00
    Help from the state £0.00
  • You have asked this question before, and yes, it is quite normal.

If your daughter is not well she should see her GP.

Given how many people moan that their adviser does not do enough to help them, one being so proactive would surely be a positive?

When I was between 26 weeks and 52 weeks I went to the job centre every week. However one week was to sign the other was to see the advisor.

Is this similar or just signing?

Also just get your daughter to apply to everything they tell her to apply for. She can take it up with them later if she gets feedback etc.

  • JSA claimants are not compelled to provide JCP with a contact email address and cannot be sanctioned for failing to do so.

She can withdraw her consent for JCP to contact her by email (and/or phone and SMS messages too) if she desires to.

The downside is the adviser sounds like a fanatic who might take it upon herself to dream-up new ways of 'helping' her.

I would not recommend withdrawing SMS messages. On two occasions I have had an appointment booked for me with a adviser which I was not told about via letter. The only warning I had was when I received a SMS the day before telling me I had to be there the next day, which meant a phone call to the centre to ask what the text meant and what time my appointments was!

My daughter's GP is aware of the issues and she has been referred appropriately. I am not asking for health advise @jacques chirac so go and be nasty to someone else.

GP will write a letter if needed- not sure who to address it to though?

She is only signing on since July so only 2 months.

The pressure the "advisor" puts on her is really inappropriate - it is not aviser being "proactive", it is bordering on bullying/haressement.

I did not know she can withdrew consent re her email adderss, thanks for that.

She gets emails with lists of links almost every day.

She completes about 20 - 30 "actions" every week, most of them real job applications and then searches, contacting employers etc etc and still get those emails with instruction to "apply for all of them".

Lots of them are not even in London (where we live) and not cummutable.

Thanks for relevant replies, really appreciated.

that might be the reason she has to go so often, I doubt they will want to see her every week for the life of the claim as they are busy and would not be able to do that for everyone.
  • Some random thoughts, is it possible for you or another family member or friend to accompany her to signings to provide her with some reassurance? Having someone to witness the adviser's manner and tone would likely make her attitude more bearable. Could she transfer to a different JCP in the same general area to escape her clutches?

Everyone under this particular "advisor" has to sign on every week - other advisors are happy with once every 2 weeks with their "clients". And othre do not constantly email with masses of links...
