Hi
My os is Windows Vista and the broadband router is wired to my machine. Recently I'm getting frequent dropouts when IE9 just freezes for a few seconds. It doesn't seem to be the router as all the lights remain blue. I've searched and found something referred to as VAL or Vista something Lag. I understand there are programmes to download to counteract this, but am wary of downloading from an unknown website. Can anyone please advise a trustworthy site? Or indeed any advice to cure the dropouts?
Thank you in advance

Are you sure your OS is up to date?
Vista is virtually hack proof with a decent virus checker like Norton (Macafee is not so compatible with Vista). The problem is that MS were so concerned with security that the Vista OS became so complex it slowed down performance (even with a pentium processor). That was the trade off for security.
Hence Windows 7. The security of Vista with the slickness of XP.
My advice is get Windows 7 if you can afford it. If not, keep Vista updated constantly when you've not browsing and the system will be ok. Vista, it is what it is.:mad:0 -
Apparently, recently, MS did a 3 part update, but there was a fault with it. It did the d/l, but failed to install, then repeat x infinity (there is a thread on here about it somewhere I believe?),
Eventually MS fixed it (I even got it on this Vista lappy, but I usually use an 2800 Athlon XP machine, my partner uses a 2400 Athlon XP, and she suffered from this also)...
I dodged it, on my xp machine, because it was switched off until they fixed the dodgy update, but my partner xp, and this vista lappy suffered drop outs/slooooooooow!!!!! ARGH!!!
Once they fixed it, job done, but loads of tat in temp folder, so run disk cleanup/ccleaner to get rid. I used one. But like 500mb still remained, so the other cleared the rest, on both xp and vista. Vista is memory hungry at 1gb at best of times on this lappy, with 0 available, and virtual shifting between 0-40ish..
Why is MS so rubbish? If I bought a car with so many faults/recalls/upgrades, they would break trading standards rules. So why has nobody taken to book? Their billions and global domination I guess?0 -

StewThom I'd love to have Windows 7 but this machine is about 5 yrs old & I don't think it would cope with a change of OS
Ratbot - Ran cleanup but it's still bad today. It probaly is something caused by an MA update as it's only being happening recently
dcmayhem - can't be doing with TalkTalk. Provider is BT
Thanks everyone for taking the time. I'm about due for a new PC & this may be the breaking point. I'll have to start saving up
