But when those doctors were in school, I bet they had good clear, if not beautiful, handwriting.

All my ex-pupils who did medicine had good writing.

It's a skill to practice, like any other.
My friend told me yesterday that her 16yo son won an award in yr 6 for his handwriting. 5 years on and she said his handwriting was horrible, also looking like a younger child had written it. Her son is clever, he got 1 x A* and the rest A for his GCSEs this summer.

My own son's intelligence, well depends on the subject. He is considered gifted at science and has been since he was in yr 4, maths he is naturally good at but doesn't see it himself as he dislikes the subject. DT he enjoys and Food tech to a lesser extent. English he struggles with more as he doesn't seem able to describe well. French and History he will drop the minute he goes into yr 10 as he did music, art, dance and drama for this year.

Haha I've made the exact same comments to my husband about our son re. being a Dr.

From his end of year report he exceeded in areas such as maths, technology and understanding of the world (don't think they have 'science' as such in reception), however the one subject he was below average on was writing.

I said that's no problem as he's going to be a neurosurgeon anyway, !!!! handwriting is almost a pre requisite for being a Dr.

On a serious note I've bought him the little practice books you can buy so hopefully this will help him improve.

He should focus on speed and legibility rather than "neatness". When he does his GCSEs he will need to be able to write multi-page essays under exam conditions. He's not going to be marked on how perfectly formed his letters are, but the writing must be legible and he must be able to churn them out quickly.
  • I taught myself alternative ways of writing by hand, and can now write in all versions "fluently"! Just took alot of practice, and conscious effort to do..
One is regular joined-up, one the same but not joined, the other mini capitals.. also learnt to do flourishes on y/g/j when doing the seperate one.. now can decide on what I'm doing and write in any with no issue!
