Late payment

Hi,

I purchased an item on Very and then returned this but unbeknown to me the delivery charge still remained. As I was not made aware this remained, I then went away with work not realising that this was being recorded as a late payment on my credit file.
I returned from being away with work and discovered the letter from Very stating I was overdue this amount (£4.20!). I then paid this promptly.
I then made a mortgage application which was declined, only finding out that this late payment is showing on my credit file and causing the mortgage to be declined. I have an unblemished credit history apart from this late payment.
I have spoken to Very who stated that I am responsible as per the T&C's as delivery charges still stand.
I share the letterbox where I live with 2 other households and Very never made any attempt to contact me by email or phone to state I was overdue and it only came to light once I returned from work.
I cannot get a mortgage as this is on my credit report as a late payment and my credit score is perfect apart from this late payment.

Is there anyone who can give me some advice or know of a solution to this matter as it's causing me a lot stress not getting a mortgage for the sake of £4.20. I am looking at contacting the Financial Ombudsman to progress further with this.

Thanks in advance....Sparra16

Are you sure this is the true reason? Lenders score you themselves they do not use CRA ratings.

Personally I doubt it would be the sole cause..

I've had a few late payments, and they don't make that much of a difference to be honest... How late was the payment ??

Unless it defaulted, I cannot see it causing the issue alone??
  • It's my broker who is obtaining the Mortgage for me (Santander), they have replied stating that because of this late payment, it's stopping me from getting the mortgage I want (should of been more clearer in first message!).
It's not defaulted, just Very didn't notify me via post/email/text that I was behind and late on payment.

    (Thanks for replies guys :T)

Find a better broker. A late payment marker is not a default. You are being treated as if you had a CCJ from a Court - yet you were nothing like being close to one. Get them to reassess, as a refusal for this alone belies belief.
  • Ok thanks for the advice, any thoughts on what to do with VERY? I could do with removing this anyway as it's only £4.20!!

The amount of money owed is irrelevant I'm afraid.
  • sparra16, you could always phone Very again explaining the problems this has caused to your mortgage application and ask them nicely if they would remove the late payment from your credit file.

They may reconsider particularly if you have been a good customer. Ask to speak to a supervisor if not successful and failing that write an official complaint. You have everything to gain. Be persistent.

Why would they though? Irrespectve of previously being a good customer, it's an accurate representation of what happened.
  • Sure, I take your point. The OP has everything to gain by trying.

Maybe the person they speak to is humane and in the interests of retaining the customer, they might reconsider.
