If your husband is based in Stratford then essex is a much better bet than Kent.
There are two main Essex train lines, the Liverpool street line and the Fenchurch Street one.
The Liverpool Street line goes through Stratford while the Fenchurch Street one would require changing onto London Underground at West Ham(not all peak services stop at West Ham though), so Liverpool Street line would be more sensible.
If you still want rural then you don't want to come too far into London, Brentwood would be as close as i'd come in unless I wanted 'City' life.
Brentwood, Shenfield, Rayleigh, Billericay and parts of Chelmsford are all very nice and I wouldn't want to go any further out than Chelmsford because of the additional commute. Also, there are more rural places around those places mentioned such as Hullbridge which really give more of a country village feel.
I wouldn't even look at Kent because you'll have to go into Central London and back out again which will mean higher rail fares and a much longer commute.
Personally, i'm looking to move to Brentwood myself as it really is a lovely place with only a 30 minute train journey to Stratford. It's quite rural(I cycle a lot and there's some lovely country roads to cycle on), has a good Town Centre with most of what you need and is right on the junction of the M25 and A127 and just one junctioon from the A13 so has excellent transport links.
The main concern would be that you're £250,000 budget will limit the choice of property somewhat if you want 3 bedrooms but it won't be too much of a struggle to find somewhere in budget.0 -

When they're running on time, or at all! Just moved from there. Got sick of turning up late for work cos of delays or cancellations. Had problems getting home more than once a week, sometimes more like 4 out of 5 nights. Never had so many cancellations or problems before on another line!

You can get to Stratford from Ebbsfleet in Kent in about 13 minutes, cutting out the trawl across London via underground.0 -

Yep, but surely that will be very expensive?!
