Thanks to Jivesinger and ThemeOne I feel as if I am now doing quite well with Windows 8.

Plusnet Technical Support (with huge patience) talked me through setting up email through Thunderbird and I'm so thrilled to say that it's working beautifully. They sorted out my 'old' email so I don't use it but have not lost the emails there and can still view them till I don't need them any more. All this was after midnight and I'm really impressed and thankful. They even sent me an email outlining everything for me.

Glad you got it sorted. I used to have a Plusnet account and found them pretty good.

I agree with ThemeOne about the Metro/Modern UI apps - don't use them if you can help it.

However one thing about Metro apps is definitely worth learning: how to escape from them if you find yourself in one unexpectedly! You use the keystroke combination Alt-F4 or click somewhere at the top edge of the screen and drag down with the mouse.
