How long for the Halifax switching offer?

I already have a Reward account and I did the online app on Friday, but my old N+P account is still open with my 2 direct debits showing there and no £100 in my Halifax account. How long does it normally take and is it strange they haven't sent me any email etc?

  • I'm currently interested by this offer, so interested to hear some thoughts. Point 7 in their terms below state that cashback should be there immediately after switch.

    T&Cs:

    1. The offer applies to applications received in branch, online or by phone from 16th September 2013. The offer is subject to change and can be withdrawn without notice at any time.
    2. If you do not meet the conditions of the offer we may claim back the £100. We will do this by debiting £100 from your account. We may also start to charge you daily fees that we had previously waived under this offer for using the overdraft.
    3. This offer does not automatically guarantee you an overdraft. Any application made for an overdraft will be subject to status.
    4. If your account has an overdraft you will not pay any daily overdraft fees for 6 months provided you stay within your planned overdraft limit; if you exceed your planned overdraft limit, then unplanned overdraft fees will still apply.
    5. After 6 months, or if you change your current account, you will be charged daily overdraft fees applicable to the account you hold if you use your overdraft.
    6. Only one offer is available per customer. Joint accounts will only be eligible for one payment.
    7. The offer will be paid directly into your account when we start your switch and will appear as a cash credit.
    8. The offer is not available to customers whose existing account is being managed by our Recovery Departments.
    9. The offer is not available to employees of Lloyds Banking Group, or if the employee is named on any bank account held in joint names.

The T/C you quote are the NEW ones that relate to the NEW (16/09/13) 7 day switching service.
OP applied before the 16th. Therefor may have to wait longer.

So in the OP's case. The old account may not be closed.
I would suggest that the OP contacts Halifax to get a timescale.

I got a letter about week after my online application. No emails. It said to take ID into a branch and also return some forms which they forgot to enclose.

Took my ID into the branch about a week later and they basically re did the whole process there and then got my account opened with my £100 in before I left.

The online switching service is a total waste of time in my experience. Just go to a branch and it will be done instantly.

For online switchers, I'd expect it within a week.
  • Thanks guys. Is there any way to send them online messengers like you can for San/NW etc?

    No.

Are you opening a new account or switching to your existing account?

If you're switching by the old method, you don't expect to see much progress. They'll ask N&P for a list of your SOs and DDs and stick you in the pending tray until it appears. If it doesn't, they probably won't chase until you phone. When they get it, they ask the payees to swap your DDs. You don't see any movement until the payees get round to it.

If you go into a branch they'll probably just start again using the new switching service.

I thought you had to switch and close an account which already has 2DD on it--all online for the £100.Good to know they do it in branch.

As I've never done before, how do you change the direct debit from one bank to another manually by yourself?

You give the payee your new sort code and account number, to replace those they have on file for you. Many companies let you do this online if you have online access with them, others you need to call, and/or send them a DD change form which invariably you can download from their website.

Do a change immediately after they have taken a payment so they have plenty of time changing their records before the next payment becomes due.

As soon as you can see the DD in your new account, it should automatically disappear from your old one. If it doesn't, cancel the old one.

There's nothing in the T&Cs specifically stating a minimum number of direct debits.

Contact the company in question. Sometimes this can be done online (e.g. for credit cards).

Oh yes...to get the £100 you just have to switch and close the other account.
To get £5 per month, you need to pay in £750 and should pay out 2 DD (can't do with some dormant DD:o)
