EON Economy 10 Tariff
Our 4 bed property has an Economy 10 Metre/Tariff fitted.
We have a gas boiler with centralheating radiators.
My understanding was this tariff wasbrought in for properties with Electric Storage heaters? to beneft from the cheaper night tariff. I hardly use anything on the evening off-peak tariff (possibly washing machine/dishwasher) but not every night!
My supplier is EON and my bills havebeen rising for the last 12 months, and I need to address this!
Would a single rate metre be moresuited to me?
EON have said before they can changethe metre that I need to get an independent electrician to check my wiring issuitable for a single rate metre. At mycost?

As you don't use electric storage heaters to heat your home, it is very likely that you will be better off on a single rate tariff. I seem to recall that the charge for replacing a meter is usually about £50.
Have you ensured that your property is adequately insulated? If not, this should also be addressed.0 -
Hi greggp
You're right, Economy 10 meters are usually found in all electric properties with storage heaters and water immersion heaters.
They give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity for heating and water heating purposes during three separate periods in each 24 hours. To do this, they're wired directly into the heating and water heating circuits at individual properties.
As you've gas central heating, I suspect you may well now benefit from a single rate meter.
Because of the way Economy 10 meters are set up, though, we do recommend asking an independent approved electrician to check over the wiring before changing the meter.
Ultimately, the choice of whether or not you employ an electrician is down to you but we've a duty of care to let you know about the possible implications.
I can confirm the cost of the electrician is down to you. As Ecodave says, we're also currently charging £51.05 to change a meter.
Hope this is of interest. Let me know if you need any more details as will be happy to help.
