Capitol One Stalling on PPI payments

Hi,
I had a claim approved by Capitol One in March and waiting the quoted 28 days for a cheque. The cheque never arrived and after numerous calls and promises I have never received payment of £1600.
I have names dates, times, and extension numbers of all my calls and only last week they now suggest the cheque was cashed in July!!!!!
I have now had to get the police involved but dont believe anything they tell me, they also refuse to send anything in writing to confirm the issues they discuss over the phone so I can get nothing in writing!!
Is anyone else having similar issues and what kind of advice can I get moving forward.
many thanks in advance for any assistance or feedback I can get.
