Convenience store opening times..

Did'nt know where to put this thread on this site so sorry if it;s in the wrong section..
Anyway my question which l hope someone may be able to give me some help on is that we have a convenience store near us on a council estate and the store is close to surrounding house's..
We have had a letter off the council saying they have asked the council if the opening times can stay open till 11.00pm ..
Can this be done on a built up council estate or do we have grounds to fight this proposal and what could we do..
.

You can complain but many convenience stores open to that time in residential areas. Get a petition together with local residents if you don't want this to happen.

    But isn't a closing time of 11pm "convenient"? ;)

Guess why you have received the letter from the Council?

The letter has been sent because they are asking local residents if they want the store to be open this late. It is just like if you ask for planning permission, they have to ask those round and about for their views.
As other say see what other residents say and get a petition signed, but you will find many convenience stores open this late.

Why would you want to fight it ?

I live in a non council mixed owner/rent area and the local corner shop is open til 11pm and it causes no issues whatsoever. (I live almost opposite)

They aren't permitted deliveries late at night and it's very handy.

Now the church run youth club near it is another matter-it's a pain in the butt with loitering shouting teenagers the evenings it is on...(there's a core group who never go inside but hang out outside it)

My OH has a small Co-op near him open til 10pm too-again no issues whatsoever.

Presumably the council are seeking local opinions so you could respond giving your reasons why you feel a later opening would be undesirable and your objection would be taken into consideration.

Are there issues with other businesses locally that open late ? Do they cause issues ? How close are you to the business ? How do you feel it would be undesirable? Are your neighbours likely to feel the same ? What are the current hours of the shop ? Most people aren't bothered and with more and more people working shifts later opening is considered a good thing.....look at the supermarkets !

Neither store is especially busy after 9pm -whenever I've gone in I've either been the only customer or one of two. I don't see how it is economic to open so late but it is a benefit to me.

  • There are many convenience stores that stay open late, with no problems, yet there are others that seem to attract all the noisy youths, drunks, and down and outs, in our local town, one convenience store which shuts at 11pm does a roaring trade all day and all night, I think the reason it does so well is, it has an old fashioned red telephone box outside, which 90% of the trade use as a public urinal, and it also has a patch of grass and two benches outside, this is ideal for the drunks to sit and drink their takeaway booze, and when they are tired they can just lie down on the grass, they even sit there with umbrellas up in the rainy weather. Yet another convenience store half a mile up the road gets none of this.
