Taking varnish off staircase & re staining

Hi
Does any1 know of a quicker way to take varnish off a stair case?
Tried with sandpaper last night & as there's so many little corners etc it will take forever!
Any advice appreciated.

I have in the past used a hot air gun successfully but practice on a piece of board first. It is easy to scorch wood until you've got the hang of it. Hope that helps.0
