new to electricity bills, dont understand what to look for in tariffs/deals?

I am a student going on my placement year, and soon to be moving in to a 1 bed, 1 person flat in Birmingham. I'm trying to look at tariffs/deals on who will be cheapest for me to go with and I have no idea what to look for.

I need electricity only and need help in figuring all this out!

How much electricity would I be using per month? And what would be the average cost per month?

Thankyou in advance!

Initially you will be on a legally binding 'deemed tariff' with the utility company supplying the flat. As soon as you move in, read the meter and ensure that you notify that company of the meter readings and your details.

Initially you will be placed on their standard tariff(the most expensive). You can see what cheaper tariffs that company has available, but ensure that you find out if they have penalty clauses for leaving early.

Switching to another company takes several weeks. Changing tariff with the same company is 'instant'.

How much you will use is a 'how long is a piece of string' question. It depends on many factors:

Type of electrical heating. Do you have storage heating and an Economy 7 tariff.

    Insulation properties/size of flat.

How long you will spend in flat.

    Cooking? baths or showers etc.

Probably £80 a month might be a start point, more in mid winter.
  • Okay - thankyou so much for all of this!

Once you have your estimated annual kWh consumption, use any comp site to find the best deal.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
