Marks & Spencer CC application query

Options
Applied for a M&S CC today. I had an email back saying the application has been referred to their underwriters for a decision and I will hear in 3 days. I just want to know if that's the usual process or not?

I'm asking as just over a year ago I acquired a Tesco CC and they too wanted additional information before I got the card. I have an excellent credit record and all my credit reports are completely clean. I have a decent salary and never had any defaults or late payments or anything. I have a smallish mortgage and one small current CC balance. There have been no changes in my address or personal circumstances etc. I'm genuinely puzzled why it seems to be a bit harder to get a credit card. I've never had any problems whatsoever in the past.

I would say that applications that are referred are in the minority. Still a reasonable chance of acceptance after a referral.

Thanks, that's what I wondered but don't really understand. I've always been used to my credit applications pretty much going through on the nod so to speak. I'm on £40k a year and no past problems whatsoever (never even been overdrawn in my life) and I was hoping I would be told it was standard practice these days. I honestly would have thought I was as a low risk as it comes. I know it doesn't count for anything but Noddle for example gives me 5/5. I know there's no way of finding out what the specific issue is but its a genuine puzzle to me.

Only one thing I can think of is the name of our property. For some bizarre reason although the properties are numbered 1-4 the first two are called "cottages" and the second two "bungalows". That does cause a lot of confusion in that we invariably come up as "cottages" on any database even though we are definitely "bungalows". Not sure why that would impact any credit application though and never has done so before. I know when I got my Tesco CC I had to send them certified proof of my address.

I don't want any rejection on my credit record which is 100% clean to date.

Even if you are rejected, it won't show as a rejection on your credit file. It will only show as a credit search.

    That's good to know.

I'm one of those people who likes to know the reason for something especially when I know my credit is good. The online form didn't recognise my address despite the property having been here for 60 years. Can't help but wonder if that's something to do with it. Have contacted M&S to ask but doubt they will tell me anything specific.
  • Funnily enough I applied for one on Sunday. Got an email back a few hours later saying that I had been accepted, but they would send a form through the post for signing.

So, at least in my case, they can accept you outright.

Of course, my credit file is spotless, I dress smartly and type very smoothly. I have a perfect body, fantastic personality and do many great charitable works. I am globally recognised as a great bloke.

I'm obviously failing on the body part..........

Seriously though its interesting to know that. Makes me even more curious now though.

George Clooney - is that you?!?
  • I was referred to underwriters and accepted. One thing to note is the limit the underwriters told me they'd accepted me for over the phone was significantly more than M&S gave me.

Had an email now accepting me. Just would have liked to know the reason why.
  • You should be happy.

    It wasn't just a referral.

It was a Marks and Spencer referral. :)
