Solid state recorder

Hi all...
I'm wanting to buy a fairly portable recorder for recording singing lessons and concerts. Ideally it would be a solid state one that I can hook up to the computer and burn off CD's.
I haven't the foggiest where to start from! I had been using my MP3 player to record but the quality isn't very good.
Any advice on specs and makes that I should be looking for would be most appreciated!
I'm willing to spend up to £500 on the right equiptment.

The zoom is pretty good quality and not too badly priced at around the £200 mark. Does the job a treat
The Marantz models have slightly noisier mic inputs than some.We all evolve - get on with it0
