International resident trying to build credit.

So I moved to the UK two and a half years ago as a Masters student and was essentially told by the banks that up until a few months ago I would not be building any credit. That being said I now have a non-existent credit score as I have not needed to take out loans and don't have anything but my bank card. All bills have been paid on time and in full while in the UK as well as back in the states where i had a good credit rating. I was wondering if there was any way to link up my old score to help inform my new one? Or a quick way to build up a non-existent one without incurring unnecessary debt? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You basically have to start over from scratch as agencies from different countries don't report to each other.

The only company that does this to some effect (from what I have read on here) is American Express. If you had an Amex card in the US and ran it well, you are more likely to get a new Amex card over here as they will have your history on record.
  • It is going to take a while. I've been here since late 2006 and still have problems getting through credit checks. Build up a relationship with a bank and then get a credit card from them as soon as you are able - it took me about a year to do so.

Also, are you able to get on the electoral roll? If so, get on it ASAP. Unfortunately, I'm not able to and it seems to cause a lot or problems.
