Second the 1.6 16v longevity issue, I had a MK4 Astra and by 80k the engine, although correctly maintained, was knackered.
  • my head is screaming OMG its going to be trash once its taken on a long run without first having fresh oil fresh water fresh brake fluid.

then im thinking about suspension issues having a 13 yr old shocks and springs, then im thinking ball joints and split rubber roll bar bushes ball joints and other bushes because its seen the minimum of use.

I think its worth today would be £1.2k top end to someone with love for the brand.

to me id pass on and never consider know what potential issue could be round the courner to use it as a daily runner.
  • Personally, I'd sell the car & get as much for it as you can.

There seems little point keeping the car in his garage & having to take it out every now & then just so your son can have it in a couple of years.

Theere will be other cars available by then and his car will have de-valued in the 2 years.

I'd do the same. Sell it now, put the money in a savings account, and use the money to buy something else when your son needs a car. If it's even a year out then you'll be better off and that's before you considering needing to pay for tax/insurance/MOT/maintenance on it for that year.
