Reclaim Income protection after they cancelled it

Hello,
I wondered if anyone could advise please?
My recently dearly departed mum was paying By direct debit for income payment protection. However we found that in 2004 the provider had actually terminated the policy and turned down her appeal saying the underwriters never would have covered her and certainly would not continue the policy due to a couple of things on her medical records when she tried to claim due to an illness back then. They said in correspondence that it was cancelled and refunded her instalments to the cancellation date.
However they carried on taking direct debits since then which was over 9 years ago and sent her yearly renewals which mum must've thought they changed their mind.
I have written to them and to be fair they responded saying they will refund as long as I can provide copies of !their! letter saying it was cancelled (surely they should have a copy?) Anyway I can provide their letters no problem, in fact I have three letters from them on that subject.
I suppose I want to know if I should just accept the refund which is about £2400 or ask for interest too. My husband said I should ask for compensation but I'm not sure as mum has died so she wouldn't be benefitting from that and I don't want to be greedy. Any ideas please?

Can I claim the interest using the statutory interest rate of 8% do you think?0

I take it you are the Executor of your Mum's Will as would the money not have to be paid into the Estate?0

Why didn't you include copies of all your supporting documents with your original complaint? You'd already have the money by now...0 -
Mum didn't have a will but I have applied for the grant of admin which will be issued to us in about 10 days as we swore oaths today, but yes I asked them to refund to the estate.
I'm not in a rush for the money as i couldn't do anything until we get the grant of admin and had assumed they had the letters as they knew about it when I spoke them in the phone.0 -
