Disability grants for the full time employed.

Good Morning,

I wonder if anyone has experienced the same issues I am having at the moment.

I have recently moved in with my fiance, both of us are in full time employment although I am also disabled and receive the higher rate mobility and the middle rate care component of DLA.

One of the things I have found is that because I am in employment none of the schemes that would benefit me are actually offered to me, in other words I am actually being penalised for working.

The boiler scheme and the winter fuel allowance are both being denied me and nobody seems to think I am entitled to any of the help that I would get so readily were I simply to be sat down and claiming from the state.

I work hard to retain my independence and to provide for my family but also there are periods of time, the winter especially when my health really does take a nose dive and I face months of having an increased amount of absence because of disability.

All the avenues I have tried so far have been met with a resounding no.

If anyone has any help or advice they may no of I would greatly appreciate it, it's times like this I can se exactly why so many people opt for the easy option of not getting a job in the first place.

  • At February 2013, there were 3.30 million recipients of DLA, 57% were working age with a 50%-50% gender split and approaching 50% of DLA recipients work. All the 'schemes' as you put it are means tested. If "All the avenues I have tried so far have been met with a resounding no." I assume your household income is too high to be classed as fuel [spends more than 10% of its income on fuel to maintain a satisfactory heating regime, usually 21°C main living area, and 18°C degrees for other occupied rooms] poor.

    Are you claiming that the "increased amount of absence because of disability" is directly related to inadequate heating at home or inadequate heating at work in the winter period ?

    Hiya Thank you for your response, my own particular situation is that yes as a household we are on too large an income, as my fiancee actually works for ATOS ironically on the medical board testing people for DLA, my health can and often does deteriorate quite significantly in the winter due to increased chest infections and all the associated problems with that as well as my pain is greatly increased in the curvature of my spine, this leads to me having more time off work and thus losing out on money (no work no pay).

    However this does not answer my original question as to whether there are any schemes for people such as myself who are in full time employment but due to our disabilities more prone to ill health and reduced earnings.

    - you either are or are not fuel poor, clearly your household income per annum is too high to qualify
    - neither extra heating nor extra required hot water needs for a medical condition would improve your work attendance rate
    - you would do better, and get more help by asking a mod to move this thread to here
