Painting panelling

We have installed some grooved panelling from B&Q in our bathroom and intend to paint it.
Do we need to use primer then undercoat then paint? My wife intends to use some very expensive paint so I want to do it properly.
And does anyone have any advice round types of primer and undercoat and the brushes needed? Any other useful advice?
I think all in all we have about 6m X 1m to paint.
Thanks in advance.
