Hi. Have a renault megane cc2005, for some reason the brake lights are staying on permanently. When I got the car the 3rd high level brake light was disconnected so I reconnected it. Lights worked fine for a week or so but now stay on permanently.
Short term option is to unplug 3rd light but need a long term option if any one can help
thanks
james

I doubt the high level brake light will make any difference at all.........
Sounds to me like you've got a broken (or sticking) brake pedal switch.
On that model, the usual French laziness means the switch is on the passenger side, where it would be on a LH drive version. Instead of building the car properly, they just use extension bars (or cables) to move the pedals to the RH side.
Wouldn't surprise me if it's been damaged by someone kicking it.“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Disconnect the high level brake light again and see if the problem goes away, as that helps to diagnose the problem. The light was probably disconnected for a reason...
It could be an electrical earth fault.0 -
There's quite a broad range of cars that, having a faulty brake light switch, will "helpfully" put on the brake lights to warn others of this fault. Sounds if the electronics were playing up and to stop dazzling other drivers at the lights, previous owner just disconnected the high level one and didn't fix the intermittent fault.0

thanks for all your replies, all very plausible....i have found the fault and thankfully it was much simpler than it could have been,
Previous owner had obviously had a couple bulbs go, as opposed to changing for stop/tail bulbs had just put stop bulbs on so when i saw the car driven with lights on looked like brake lights were on, changed for stop and tail problem solved
thanks for your thoughts people but thank got it was easy

Sorry OP but you said the lights worked fine for a week then went faulty again? Doesn't sound like the bulbs.0
