Astra 1.8 thermostat?
Hi
This is my parents car. It's a 1.8 Astra SRi Petrol, 2003, 100k miles.
I just noticed that when driving, the temperature gauge is flat zero. If you leave the car sit, the temp gauge rises steadily. This would usually suggest to me a bad thermostat.
Only thing is, the heaters are still hot whether you are sat or if you are driving. Is my diagnosis of a bad thermostat still right?

Sounds like the thermostat is stuck open.
Quite common to happen on this engine.
Take it out and put it in boiling water.
Either way replace it as its the cheapest option.0 -
Yes thermostat for sure, I need to do mine...... Only problem is getting the coolant out, apparently theres a valve (which I can't find) and I don't want to remove the hose clips because it's been about 10 years since I came across a decent jubilee clip (one that doesn't tear itself up and spring open).“I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to make an a** of yourself.”

Should be a Z18XE engine... Easy enough to do with minimum coolant loss... ZX18 stats usually come as a unit with the Housing....2 Bolts to undo , off gasket on ad 2 bolts...Really straightforward.0

Grand, I just wanted to make sure. It was the fact the heaters didn't cold up that threw me. The last few cars I've had which have needed new Thermostats all had cold heaters.0

any signs of coolant loss, dirty coolant, gunk on oil filler cap, steamy exhaust
is the radiator getting hot, after a journey, or after a standstill with engine running!!

Normally, if it was my own car, I'd order one from Euro Car Parts and get going.
But, this one needs the cambelt kit done as well as it's due and it's my parents car and I'd rather not mess with it as their reliant on it and I'm a hack! So this will be a garage job methinks!
If you're a bit handy, have a go yourself0 -
You're lucky, the next shape Astra doesn't even come with a temperature gauge. Although I do have an app for that.0
