I used to be able to get on Facebook fine till all of a sudden it kept giving me the message "not responding". I got a man in to look at my computer but he said it was fine but the problem was that when he checked the little box under the phone in the kitchen the speed was 4 times faster than the speed getting to my computer. The husband has just spent the weekend putting a cable from the little box under the phone to the hub beside the computer in the study. He says the speed is twice as fast as it was but is still half the speed coming into the little box from wherever it comes from. BT says they will charge £130 odd to come out and look at it. Should I just upgrade to BT infinity hoping that will sort it out. Its driving me nuts and I know its the husband's fault. He's freakin well done somehting to it.

My download speed is 1.28 mb/s and
upload speed is 0.4449 mb/s

Its not only on Facebook, its on anything. All of a sudden it just freezes up then I get the non responding message.

Maybe Farcebook just doesn't 'Like' you ;):)

Seriously though, I'm assuming from your description that you are on ADSL Broadband via the phone line, not cable. In which case you will have a filter(s) at each phone connection point to separate the low frequency telephone voice signals from the much higher frequency broadband signal.

These filters often fail and so you could try replacing them to see if it makes a difference ...

Upgrade wont sort out an internal problem .

Speed should be measured from the internal socket on the master socket .Usual for that to be where the phone line enters the house .Any lost speed then at the PC is either your cabling or internal interference .

Is your connection from the router / hub wired ?
If its wireless then that may degrade the signal further .

    worth a read

  • Rather than replacing the filters to see if one is faulty, I would suggest unplugging anything plugged into your other phone sockets first to see if that makes a difference.

Early Sky boxes are notorious for causing problems with ADSL so, if you have a Sky box plugged into a phone extension, you could start with unplugging this first.
  • Hi,
Have you spoken to the people who provide your broadbans?
    They can be very helpful.

  • From what I understand you were originally plugged into an extension socket but are now plugged into the master socket?

Is the master socket a split one? Has the bottom part been removed to enable the plug to go into the socket that is normally covered? That is the test socket and is the immediate connection to the line.

You will be getting a lower speed if you are on the end of a long extension lead, these are generally low quality and do not work as well as proper cabling.

As this has started happening recently have you knocked any other extension boxes, or been doing some work somewhere that might have damaged cable? It could be anywhere in the house? How many cabled extensions have you got in the house?

If you want to go back as you were your best bet is to get hold of an independent telecoms engineer, they will charge you far less than BT and probably do a better job. We spend a lot of time going round and solving problems after BT have "fixed" problems.

  • Just had a similar problem, never had above 1.4 mb as too far from exchange. 1 month ago speed dropped to 1mb, Talktalk checked and said within normal limits. Was thinking of changing when speed dropped to 0.09 mb;

another hour on the phone to talktalk, finally they decided it was an internal house fault and wanted to send out an engineer at great cost. As the cable runs direct from wall socket ( in built filter) direct to router I figured I could sort that out myself ! In fact replacing cable with a new shorter ASDL cable has not only returned my speed to previous but increased it to 1.71mb.

I also used to get speeds less than 2.0 Mbps (usually between 1.2 - 1.7) but since removing ring wire I get between 2.2Mbps and 2.7Mbps.
