Crutches Advice please?

Hello
I have an op next week and instead of feeling down about it I decided to give myself a project so I can see the positive. Lol!
I have my own crutches, I know how I am decorating the aluminium, but I want to paint the grey rubber cuff/handle. What type of paint is best? I was thinking spray paint but will be gutted if I wear a light top and end up with black paint rubbed off on it!!
Any ideas ?
Apologies if this in the wrong section
Thankyou :-)

Do you really want to draw attention to yourself to the extent that you need to ask on the best paints for the hand grips? I find your post quite offensive as I no longer have two legs, I have to hop around on one leg, the last thing I want is to 'advertise' this by making my crutches stand out, moreso the handles too.

Sorry for being harsh, maybe many on crutches are in a damned sight worse situation than making their crutches look pretty.

Bit harsh, O/P just wants to make the best of a bad situation.

Why shouldn't they make their crutches look nicer and have a semblence of pride in the way they look.

I purchased a Kowsky crutch in black for this very reason as people seem not to see the bog standard silver ones and tend to walk through you.

Good luck with the finding the right paint, alternatively ebay etc may have some pre-coloured ones for sale that you could swap over.
  • I understand that some people don't like drawing attention to crutches etc, but for me, my crutches and my wheelchair are like my glasses. I have to use them so they may as well look how I want them to:D

I have never painted the rubber handles on crutches before-I think it might be hard to get a paint that sticks. You could try a spray primer and then spray paint. It shouldn't rub off but may well flake off... see if you can replace the rubber grip (also got kowskys-love being able to do this with them!) or you could buy/make crutch handle covers.

Good luck with your op and I hope the crutch decorating also goes well :)

You can't paint them, as you were told previously.

You would need to either replace those parts, or the aid altogether.

I also find it a bit weird, when you can get printed/painted ones already done for very little money indeed.
  • Parva, feeling offended by me wanting to make the best of MY situation is a bit silly in my opinion. I was only asking for advice on paint- each to their own!

Thankyou. Paint is definitely out of the question then! The ore coloured ones aren't too cheap and I am on a budget (unless you can recommend anywhere that's mega cheap?) . Thanks you , I think I might give ribbon a go, il have supports on the handles as they get a bit sore anyway.
    Thanks again

Fair comment I guess. Drawing attention to myself is the last thing I would want (a missing leg tends to do that on its own) so my apologies.

Parva, I understand. We all deal with our dodgy bits in different ways.

We do all deal with these things differently. Op has another thread where a reply was something along the lines of 'why decorate when I just want to throw these ones I've been using for six weeks away' to which my response is that my long term use of mobility aids makes me hate the ugliness of them.

ATM I only have to use a folding walking stick, for which I am very grateful, as I 'm not ,want to be this lucky and won't always be. While it is the sticks etc I object to and the need for them, I find the ugliness of them further depressing. Painted ones, or glittery ones just don't do it for me. DH has asked me not to use anything that could be described as a pimp stick,:rotfl: and the sort of witches staff might look all too fitting some days, and make me look like I am batty as well as wobbly.

Until the ideal answer is found I 'm just quite grateful when I am getting out and a bout tbh, :D

when I had my arm tied to my body in a murky grey/green sling I found it EXTREMELY depressing, and found that it was much improved by the addition of a pretty pink flowery hair slide on the strap. Many people commented on it as well.

DH recently required a similar sling, and was vehemently against prettying it up.

    So maybe it's a man thing ...
