Sounds similar to the trick some people seem to do on Autotrader with cars over 100,000 miles - listing the mileage in the ad as, say, 133 and then stating in the body of the ad that it's 133,000. Not intended to fool anybody - just to get their ad at the top of the search results.
Do people still search by mileage?

I don't know about ebay but it's one of the search criteria you can use on Autotrader - albeit you can only set a maximum, not a minimum, and you can't sort results by mileage. So I guess they don't see it as one of the most important criteria for users.

I don't actually see the sense in listing a 150,000 mile car as 150 miles on Autotrader. If I don't set a mileage threshold (the highest threshold is 100,000) I'll see the ad anyway - and it's not like I can sort by mileage to bring that ad to the top, it'll just appear where it appears. And if I do set a threshold it won't do the seller any good to engineer their ad into my search results because I won't be interested in their car.
  • Yes, plenty of people still want cars under landmark mileages, eg less than 50,000, less than 80,000 miles etc.

  • I tick the box over 100,000 only....

Weeds out all the overpriced low mileage wrecks :)

I find this irritating as well and wish Autotrader would do more to clamp down on it if they're not already, if I want to find cars with higher mileages I'll search for them as I'll certainly not be buying from someone who is putting data in to falsify search results.
