How would I know whether building control has been granted?

Building control application will have been made.

Thanks, how would I know? They have planning and after pushing massively from us have party wall. But from fishing round the old tinternet, it seems that planning and building control are separate and one does not necessarily lead to 'tother.

Phone building control and ask! They will need it and it should have been applied for. Ask them to send an inspector out to look at the drains.

Yep. They would have needed planning permission to move the drain and building control to inspect the moving of the drain.

I wouldn't hang around with sewer issues. It's could lead to real big problems.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!
  • Hi, just a quick update. I have contacted the local water company on the issue of alterations to the sewer (by the builders next door). Apparently, permission IS needed but has not been applied for. The water company do not seem bothered at all and "will send a letter reminding the householder of this requirement if I so wish
My sewer is now backing up so that the downstairs loo is almost overflowing

Did you contact Building Control and environmental health?

Hi, yes contacted building control but they seem to have been privatised from the LA and did not seem to have any knowledge about whether permission for build over of drain had been applied for or granted. Did no go to environmental health as it seemed that the water company should be dealing with it as it was them who needed to grant permission and by the time I had gone through the other channels the manhole and broken drain had been covered - fragmentation and outsourcing seems to have got the better of me on this.
The issue now is the blocked drain and it was this very issue I was trying to preempt.

The issue with building control isn't really about whther they have permission to build over. Regardless of permission from the water company, there is work going on next door which is definitely subject to building control inspections.

What you want to know is whether this work has been inspected and if not, ask if they can come out and look as you think that there is an enforcement issue.

Otherwise, get in contact with your home insurers.
