Why not just install Libre Office, which is fully compatible with MS Office files for all the functions that most people ever use-and entirely free?

My dd has just bought a new laptop, we were looking at Software for Students (she's a student), but they are only for 1 year and can cost £99+.would Libre Office work as well as Windows or is it a totally different thing?

Seriously don't want to pay too much for Windows!

If buying new, I think students are entitled to a discount?

    Worth looking into.

You can definitely run Office 2007 on Windows 8, subject of course to the Office 2007 licence being transferable to the new machine.

MS Office licences cover you for installation on a "main" computer and one "portable" device (i.e. a laptop).

Although this has got more complex recently; for example I think Office 2013 isn't licensed for multiple PCs unless you get a version that specifically says otherwise.
