New Look - faulty clothing

I doubt I have any consumer rights, but thought I'd check before I give up.

I bought a cardigan from New Look online, was delivered, tried it on, loved it, decided to keep it.

Now, the problem: I always cut the tags and labels off the neck, because sometimes the tag can flip up and be sticking out the top of your clothing, or is really scratchy if it's inside.

I wore it out, chucked it in the washing machine, and it was only when I was hanging it up that I noticed it had a hole in it, right in the centre of the back. This could have been there from manufacturer, or happened while I was wearing it, or in the washing machine.

I phoned customer services, they said I would have to take it to a store, and it would be the manager's discretion, but it would be unlikely due to the cutting off the labels thing.

I'm not holding out much hope, but thought I should maybe ask here before I waste petrol and parking to get to my nearest store.
What do you guys think?

The fact that it has a hole means you could invoke the SOGA and claim the goods are faulty. Technically, the fact that you've cut the labels out and worn the jumper shouldn't affect your rights, unless it was this cutting out or wearing that damaged your jumper. What is pertinent is that this could have been caused by your machine or happened whilst you were wearing it. In both instances, you wouldn't be entitled to a repair, replacement or refund, only if the hole was there when purchased, or happened soon after despite your taking care of the jumper, i.e. there was a weak point in the knit.

Not sure I fancy your chances, tbh.

  • Hmm, if you tried it on, cut the labels, wore it. Then only noticed after washing. My money would be on the machine causing the hole tbh.

That's what I thought. It's a sort of woven material so looks like it may be able to be sewn up hopefully. Loved that cardigan too :(
