Does upgrading RAM invalidate your warranty?

Hi,
I have just purchased 2 Gb of RAM for my Acer laptop as it is painfully slow with only 512 mb.
I've just checked the manual to see where it goes and the screw that is supposed to house the memory slots has a silver sticker on it saying 'warranty void if removed' arrgggghhhhh! I always thought memory was something you could update.
What a pain!

I bought an Acer desktop for someone a little while ago.
To go with it I also bought a decent graphics card to replace the onboard graphics.
I was surprised to see a warranty sticker over both side panels.
I commented on that in a review I made about the machine.
A reply to my review stated that they had rang Acer to clarify.
Acer told them the warranty would be honoured as long as there was no physical damage to the innards (which is fair I think).
So for the Desktops, they will still honour the warranty as long as you know what you are doing.
I would imagine it would be the same for a laptop, you could argue changing laptop ram is easier than desktop ram!0 -
upgraded my desktop pc, medion said no problem with warranty just be careful of static.don't get mad do yoga0

I would give them SOME credit!
I would think if there was a screwdriver scrape across the motherboard then the warranty is void. That would be Physical damage.
They could never prove it was an Anti Static issue which caused the problem so the warranty would stand.
Like I said, I didn't speak to them but the reports are that they were reasonabe about it.0 -
How old is the Acer by the way? Could be it's out of manufacturer's warranty anyway. The age would also have a bearing on whose burden of proof it would be (ie less than or more than six months old)."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Make sure you dont knacker the warranty if thats ok (see number provided) undo the two screws at the back remove plate gently ease ram in and reattach plate at the back. (this is a generalisation of how ram is fitted) also see manual or even go to acer online as they have information on their site, something that would of been the first stop, phone for info if all ok fit ram then post on here and tell us all how to fit ram ,lol
Best of luck :beer:0 -

In that case legally it would be down to them to prove any fault/problem wasn't inherent rather than the burden of proof being on you to prove that it was. Essentially a small claims court (if it got to that) would say you were entitled to a repair or refund unless Acer could specifically provide evidence that it wasn't an inherent fault. By inherent fault I mean one that develops through normal use and not abusing the item."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

doh, I have worked it out now and it was easy!! I was looking at the right bit but the modules have been standing up in the previous two computers I upgraded the RAM on. They were sort of laying down on the acer!
Anyway, fixed now and i have stuck my silver sticker back down
Thanks for the help
