How to clear dishwasher arms

Any tips? Mine regularly get caught with a grain of rice or something (despite carefully scraping the plates off) and it gets stuck in the upper spray arm which then results in everything having a line of dried food particles going across it meaning the whole lot has to be re-washed.
The top arm doesn't come apart like the bottom ones does and sometimes tiny bits get stuck in the hole and rinsing the arm under water doesn't do the trick. I've even tried poking it with a needle to no avail so anyone any clever ideas or can think of something to pour into the arm to dissolve any food bits? Thanks

Have you tried soaking the arms to allow any debris to loosen?
One example is here http://www.howtocleanstuff.net/how-to-clean-dishwasher-spray-arms/
...that's the method I used to clear my mother's dishwasher spray arms that were leaving carp all over her dishes.0
