    1) Post it because it hasn't been posted and the sooner it is on the board the better

    2) PM the usual poster asking them if they have noticed the competition and if they will be posting it

    3) Post the competition and then PM the usual poster to let them know that is what you have done.

As others have said, apart from the mags there is no strict rule, and as long as you do it with consideration for others then you shouldn't worry about it.

Normally I do "2", especially when the normal poster is someone who is online regularly. There are some websites that are tricky to keep track of and the regular will have their own system to ensure comps aren't missed. I would usually supply an answer if possible in my PM and sometimes, if I am not sure the regular is likely to be around, I might say that I will post the comp if the regular hasn't done so by xxxxxx.

I will do "1" if the regular is not currently online and the comp has a short duration - including dailies. In these cases it would be unfair on those who would miss the comp if it was not posted immediately. I might also do "1" where I have been the regular poster in the past. I have sent PMs saying I have posted but not very often.

If a comp has just been posted and you enter it and see several other unposted comps on the website then please do not post them (at least not straight away). The original poster may be half way through posting - looking up answers etc - and deserves the chance to finish their work. Conversely if you are posting comps from a website, please post all the comps that aren't already on MSE - even if a prize is cheap/naff etc. Someone will appreciate the comp and is probably relying on you to post it.
  • This is just my opinion and I have no issues if people disagree but no need for arguments about it :)

Referring to this post I did stop posting partially because someone was just posting all the comps that I used to post. With the search function not always being great it meant that posts were getting duped more often and I was having to search with about 5 keywords and refresh the board before I posted any comp as I became so paranoid about duping (yes I am aware that I could have just posted and not cared about duping but that's just not who I am) so it was taking much longer to post each comp. The telegraph ones used to be published at 5pm and they ended up being duped quite regularly from what I remember as the forum search doesn't pick up posts as soon as they are made. I started a new job in 2010 and I think I stopped posting comps that October as I no longer enjoyed posting them and couldn't post them the second they went live. I knew that someone else would immediately start posting them anyway - which they did - so no one here would miss out :) I think it's very rare for a comp not to be posted on here even if the 'regular' posted misses it.

Personally, I think that everyone that posts a comp regardless of whether or not they usually post it should do a basic forum search but I do appreciate that this is time consuming. It's therefore helpful if you do PM the regular poster to let them know you posted.

So, I would vote option 2 or 3 just because it would help the regular poster. If they haven't been online for a while (e.g. a week or so) I would probably just post it though.

I would just add a couple of extra points

    1) If you are at all worried about whether to post a comp or not, go ahead and post it, but state on the post that you hope you're not doing the wrong thing for whatever your reason is. Anything posted in the wrong place can easily be moved. And any toes trodden on can usually be healed with a bit of communication.

    2) You can't please everyone. Most people here are kind and tolerant, in my opinion. If something is done with a good heart, and someone gets huffy about it, well TBH, I think that's their prob.

I also think it's really considerate of you to ask.

When you talk down to others it says more about you than them.
  • i dont post alot of comps theyre usually already here! but i avoid the itv ones and mag dailies as theyre usually certian posters that do those
    What goes around-comes around
  • Everyone should search before posting a comp to avoid duplicates and that includes anyone who regularly posts comps. This is a competition board and is open to everyone. I agree re the mag comps though because someone is regularly going out of their way to buy them and so that should be left. The rest though is open to any member posting. Lets remember the lessons of animal farm. All members are equal. Lets not start making some more equal than others :)

Other than that, I think comp posters do a great job and huge thanks to them all. :)

    This one?
1 How can I find comps to post on here, I’ve entered loads & want to give some back?
Regular compers on MSE already post the daily ITV comps & will arrange for someone to cover them if they aren't going to be around - because the search facility won't pick something up for at least 30 mins after posting, please remember that regular posters will probably already have this in hand! Also, the magazine comps that have their own threads will have lists of people that buy the magazines, answer the puzzles then post the answers on here for others. Please respect these existing posters as it is their money they are handing over to buy the mags & give us the answers. If you are interested in helping out or posting a particular magazine then either post in that mags thread or if you can't find the actual thread then post in the Compers Chat Corner Board to ask about it & another comper will be along to help point you in the right direction.

At the end of the day, no comper 'owns the right' to post a particular comp but please take a moment, have a look around & ask in the Compers Chat Corner Board, if necessary, to ask if there is a regular poster for a particular comp. Let's keep this a friendly place to play, avoid duplication & misunderstandings :)
