painting external wall

Options

I hope someone can give me some advice on painting an external wall.

The wall was rendered about 15 years ago but never painted. The render is in good condition and the wallis on the sheltered side of the house.

Someone told me that before painting the wall a primer/pva adhesive (I havebeen given B&Q PVA) needs to be applied, wait 24/48 hrs before painting. The paint I will be using is Sandtex ultrasmooth masonry paint. There is aninstruction on the tin about chalking, weathered, powdery and porous surfaces and to use a stabilising solution, but as far as I can see the wall is not chalking, weathered or powdery. Could it be porous?

Someone then told me to forget about using a primer/pva and just paintdirectly onto the wall, which has now confused me.

Do I or don’t I apply primer/pva to the wall before painting.

Any advice would be most welcomed.

Many thanks

Never use PVA as a sealer for paint. If the render is sound and not chalky just thin the first coat of paint about 20% to seal the wall.If the wall is chalky or the render has weathered then apply Stabilizing solution first

On a wall that old and unpainted, I would always use the correct primer/stabiliser. The top coat costs too much not to do a proper job.

And as above, don't use PVA, why would you want a layer of water soluble glue under your paint?;);)
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed
  • Many thanks for the advice especially regarding the PVA
