Saffron 4% Reg Saver issue on credit check

Went in branch and woman said she was checking my address to see if I'm on the electoral register, the next thing she tells me Experian have flagged up an issue with a different forwarding address and she will have to submit the application to her manager to approve next week?

First of all I didn't think savings accounts required a credit check to be made otherwise I would have waited a while longer as I applied for a Nationwide FD yesterday.

Secondly, does anyone know what this could be? I have a N+P account at another address in London as I was staying there whilst they sent me a cheque so I just changed address, but everything else is at my primary address. If this is what the problem is, this has been the case for months and since then I have opened several current and savings accounts with no problems.

Banks and Building Societies check against CRA records to confirm your ID and address. This isn't a full credit search but as you have found, you can still fail.

You should get hold of your CRA files as a matter of urgency so you can make any changes that might be necessary. One issue could be the address you are registered at on the electoral roll versus the address you use for your account applications. Any even slight differences will be picked up by the computer.

I'd expect them to accept paper ID where you have failed the electronic check.

All my accounts (except the N+P one) and voting register are at the same address. I did give them my passport but that's what she said.

A passport only confirms your name, not your address. You need things such as bank statements or utility bills to prove your address.

I'd be surprised if anyone could see the address you have on accounts with other institutions. This could fly straight in the face of the DPA.
  • I had letters with address on too.

For ID checks the bank doesn't get to see your file, they just tell Experian's computer what you've put on the form and Experian's computer tells them if there's a discrepancy or not. So there won't be any sense of proportion involved.

The ID check is recorded but it doesn't affect your credit because it isn't made visible to anybody else.
