Breakdown Insurance or not?

I bought from new and have not broken down yet (yes, I know I'm tempting fate here). Should I buy breakdown cover that I may never need or wait until I break down and sign up then - paying the extra premium for doing so? Who has the lowest emergency call out charge?

BTW, I actually ride a money saving 125cc motor bike :o

I just get my biked insured through a broker that provides breakdown cover as part of the deal. It's not usually much more than those that don't provide cover.

The problem you have on a bike is that you're stuck if you get a puncture far from home.

I thought it would be a reasonable money saving question for car drivers as well. Is it cheaper to have breakdown insurance or risk going without?

As with all insurance it has to be cheaper without or the insurers would not make money. Personally I have it (Autoaid £37) because I want that person to call and sort me out on the M50 hard shoulder at night in February.

I'm sure it's cheaper in the long run not to have breakdown insurance.

But it's a right pain when you break down one evening miles from home, so I have it anyway.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

A bog standard breakdown policy costs about 8p a day.

You can often get a tenner back for buying via Topcashback.

I wouldn't be on the road without it.

I've spent approx £750 on Autoaid to cover me for the last 19 years. I've used them once for a £160 recovery so I am out of pocket. I change wheels and do simple repairs myself so could have claimed more if I was not willing to do simple repairs. If I used the RAC or AA for similar cover the cost would have been far higher.

A friends car overheated 100 miles from home and 30 miles from her destination. Without breakdown cover she did not know who to call locally to help so continued driving. This ruined the engine and wrote the car off.

I pay just £4 a month for AA cover with my bank account and I also have my iphone insured and travel insurance, for me these are all things that I need and use (off to Turkey next week) so for me it offers great value for money @ £48 per year. Fortunately for me as a member of bank staff I only pay half the normal amount of £8pm.

I did have the RAC for years and never used them so I cancelled. All was well for a couple of years then my clutch cable snapped and I had to rejoin at the road side. Lesson learned and I wouldn't risk it ever again!
