Heating a garage

Hey dudes....

Moved into a house w/garage for the first time, it's uninsulated. I want to store a cooker, xmas decs, odds and sods, boxed up clothes etc without them getting damp in it or the cooker rusting so I was wondering about heating it.

Is it even necessary? Was thinking about a plug in oil heater to run just to keep the chill off so to speak....

Any thoughts? New territory for me...:o

No need....just put everything away completely dry. Use those vac bags if you want.

A oil filled heater would cost a fortune to run...it'll be cheaper replacing the items. Assuming 1kW of heat required each hour over winter 180 days @ 15p/kWh would cost about £648 in electricity. A garage would be uninsulated so would lose a lot of heat.

Cold temperatures really have nothing to do with damp, providing your garage is watertight it should have no damp issues.

I have tons of stuff stored in the attic above my garage and it all stays bone dry ;)

You'll probably be surprised how warm the garage actually stays, mine is attached to the house, but even during severe winters none of the plumbing in there has ever given me any grief :j

It may pay to check that the garage has a damp proof course, otherwise anything placed on the floor on the floor may get damp, mine has one but I'm not sure that all do.

To be honest, the heating could actually end up generating moisture. I keep stuff in a garage and it's bone dry. Just check the floor for moisture and keep an eye on it. If you've got stuff in cardboard boxes feel the texture and you'll smell any dampness.

    Interesting.....

So assuming the floor stays dry and the roof is watertight, I don't really need to worry about this?

And that you don't keep using that paddling pool in the garage throughout December, yes....

Sweet, cheers dudes, I'll just need to keep a beady on the floor then. Might get some battens/pallets to keep the boxes of the floor altogether.....
