  • When you get a job then there will be 2 incomes so it would seem a good idea to get a car.
"Dream World" by The B Sharps....describes a lot of the posts in the Loans and Mortgage sections !!!
  • In the short term, how is your city sorted for very short period rental, like citycarclub (no affiliation)?

I'd make do with taxi/public transport for interviews etc, with the view of getting a car when starting work if it helps, because cutting an hour off your commute is priceless.

But at the job hunting stage you probably don't need it or want to commit to it.

Don't get the car till you get the job. You might not need a car you might need a big car you might need a diesel car or may be an electric one would be perfect etc etc.

Use Taxi in the mean time.

The problem is that if you get something cheap just for the meantime you stand the chance of it not working when you need to get to an interview! If I were you I'd just do a bit of research about how much money you could afford to borrow and pay back, cost up the price of a car, insurance etc. but for interviews just fork out for a taxi. If it were me I'd rather arrive un-hassled by having to find the place, park and having had a bit of time to do some last minute preparation, just a final read through of your completed application form, job spec and CV puts you in a good frame of mind.

Get a job, work there a few months, then get a car.

If you need a car, rent one, in London use zip car, or whipcar for a short time.

If one gets a position that supplies a car, you may have one too many cars.

If your job needs a car, then they may have standards - like must be under 5 years, or your car could be too large for city or too small to put stuff into etc

I agree with what others have said, see what job you get and the assess the situation. I think it would be sensible to have a car and insurance shouldn't be too high around the 22-25 age.

What budget did you have in mind? I'm sure people on here would be able to give you some suggestions but then its hard to say how far you'll be driving as you don't know where you'll be working.

Can't you borrow your mother's car for the interview, then when you get a job buy a car to get there?

The problem is I can't actually get to the places with public transport :(

I'd be looking at some combinations of taxis/hire cars/lifts/bike/walking for the interviews then. Yes it'll suck, but you don't want to commit to a car until [a] you've got the job and you know what the car requirements for the job are. You don't want to be stuck paying up a car for a few months before getting a job, or getting a car and finding out it's not suitable for some reason and having to swap it.
