restore system restore windiws xp

Some advice on system restore.
I'm no expert so treat with caution.
First my story
Trying to resolve an issue on my PC, I made matters worse, but before messing things up I had made a system restore point and backed up all files on my system drive as one does. So I should be OK (you might think!).
With messed up PC I managed to get to "restore my computer system to previous state" (system restore) but guess what there were no restore points on the calender.
Now I know these restore points are located in the folder "c:\system volume information" so I tried to look in there. It said I didn't have permission (I was and am the administrator) checked who does have permission and it said "system" only. Upgraded the permissions to include me, looked and discovered the folder was empty.
No problem I had backed it up. Went to the backup (and all previous backups of that folder) and all are empty.
Why? because my backup program cannot back up folders that have "system" only permission and does not tell me so and even makes a copy of the folder just like it has backed it up but does not put any files in it.

Second My Advice
As system restore can empty itself of restore points quite readily it is advisable to make sure your backups include the folder "c:\system volume information" and its full contents. If it doesn't then you may need to change permissions on that folder.

As I said I'm an amiture so any corrections to this would be appreciated.

Now back to sorting out my PC long hand so to speak.
