Insurance - what does a wedding photographer need?

My Mum & her friend are setting up a very small time (about 3 or 4 a year) wedding photography business.

They've got a bank account, are working on a website, but what about insurance? I thought they would need some sort of public liability/cover if the photos don't come out/theft etc policy...What will they need? Where is the best place to get it?

Firstly, they need insurance to cover the equipment in case of theft or accidental damage - they need to check that their home insurance covers business equipment and that either the home or car insurance covers them when in transit.

Secondly, public liability insurance is essential - this is to cover them against claims from people who may be injured due to them, i.e. tripping up over their equipment, electrocuted, etc., or if customers visit their home, to cover against accident whilst at their home.

The above two are relatively cheap and available as a "business combined policy" from virtually any insurance broker.

You mention insurance against photos not coming out, etc - this is generally known as "product liability" and can be expensive - the best place to get this would be from photographer-specialist insurers. Assuming they are professionals, presumably they are members of a professional or trade organisation, who will no doubt have special deals for their members.
