  • I'm going to be the first to say this.. As a computer systems engineer i wouldn't buy a Mac, you can get MUCH more for your money if you buy a laptop.

Gaming isn't even really an option on the mac so i wouldn't worry about that.

An out of touch engineer then. Gaming certainly is possible on a Mac and increasingly more big name games are coming to the platform at the same time as their PC counter parts.

You will get more bang for your buck buying a traditional desktop but if you compare like for like with other premium brands all in one to apple the pricing is fairly comparable.

OP - from what you say a basic level machine will be fine for you unless you think your useage will change over time. All computers on sale today are more than capable of web browsing

As to screensize, I have the 27" screen which I generally like as I can have two things open side by side and realistically use both. If you dont have a real need for multi-tasking, your not gaming and you dont intend to use it as a TV/ watching movies then the extra real estate of the larger screen is a bit of a waste as most websites still render at a fixed width in the middle of the screen with an acre of background on either side.

That's kewl I do need side by side action so im going buy the 27", cheers for ur thoughts, I have iphone and ipad and this dell laptop which supposed to be fast. the number times I wanted to take it outside and smash it up with a hammer or against the wall cant be counted, its history. I wish had bought mac originally, they just do what it says on the tin, no hassle no crashes no grief!! however, I did like my Samsung phone, better tech for the money, but again a pain in backside when crashes, slow etc... I need something reliable and I'm a convert.

thanks for your posts and thoughts....

  • Don't forget to look on Apple refurbished, same as new but cheaper.
Then you have a year to buy 3 year Applecare which includes free help.
Buy that on Ebay or similar BUT make sure you are getting the pack not just a code as these are not protected by Ebay.

Thinking of the future - just know that the RAM is easy to upgrade, so don't pay through the nose for it right now, but the hard drive (or SSD) is in behind the screen, which is difficult (or scary at least!) to remove.
  • I bought mine directly from apple over the phone. If possible use a family members student id to purchase so you can get a discount. I used my brothers student ID to save about £400 on mine.

In regards to which imac to buy, get the 27 inch version so you can change the ram at a later date.
