Car Insurance from scratch question.

Hi, wondered if someone can help me out with this.

I'm 28, had my license for 3 years with no points, endorsements or non motoring convictions either.

Previously, I was just a named driver my mom's policy. I didn't need the car much so it made sense. Unfortunately it was written off earlier this year & my mom decided she didn't need the car much either. So that was the end of that.

Now though, I would like a car of my own. I have found one that's not too expensive and for a 3rd party fire & theft policy via quote zone, it seems pretty reasonably priced to insure. £780. Followed it through to the brokers site, entered the rest of the details and price stayed the same. So I'm good with that.

My question is this though.

Every company that has called me back today has asked me about my driving experience. Would I benefit from putting my time on my mom's policy with my details? Bearing in mind that there was a claim made. What would I need to prove that I was a named driver unitl April of this year? I still have the agreement as a pdf in my email I think..

  • If the company has asked you for your driving experience then you have a duty to tell them the truth.

It may help you disclose that you have driven a car regularly for three years. You would have to disclose if you were the driver when the car was written off of course. If not then I see no problem.

As to proof - normally you can get a letter from your mum's insurer saying that you were a named driver from date 1 to date 2 and had made no claims during that period.

The companies want to make you the best offer that they can - and if some can get you an increased introductory offer due to the fact that you have driven in the past, assuming you qualify, then go for it.
  • Hi WeeJonnie,

Thanks for the reply. It's kinda interesting....

Nobody was driving the car when it was written off. I had borrowed it that day but was not in or near the car. I left it in gear on a friends drive with the handbrake on. We went out.....came back and the car was in her house.

It wasn't for the full 3 years. I came off due to a policy error. My mom is diabetic and for some weird reason her previous underwriters charged a fortune to put me on her policy alongside her medical condition. So I came off it.

I think I have answered my own question. On the Quotezone site I put in that I had driven as a named driver for one year (i.e. this year when the car was written of) & compared against no driving as named driver. Price stayed the same.. So for ease & absolute clarity I will leave it at that. There can be no arguing if I am not trying to claim further experience.

That claim could have your name against it. I would check with the old insurers to be sure.
