HELP! Cant move files to home page!

Hi I have a samsung galaxy tab 2.
I have never had any problem downloading apps until recently. I think I might have tapped some default button somewhere.
The problem I have is that when I download an app from Amazon store, it goes into the cloud; I then use download manager to save but the file goes to various places, chosen by me, but NOT to a file where I can access it on my homepage/apps page. In effect I cant use my downloaded apps, they are stored but inaccessible.
Having spent hours on this I took it onto car phone warehouse today and they couldnt move or copy files either. I dont know how I transfer the file from Adobe reader, or wherever it has gone and I dont know which file to access to move my files into so I can use the apps. I have tried all the other files listed on download manager and none of them seem to move the app onto the apps page or the home page so I can use them.
The only suggestion that the carphone warehouse chap could come up with is that I restore factory setting... but if I do that then I lose all my data dont I? I dont really want to back everything up unless I positively have to, I just want to be able to download my apps so they are accessible.
I would be grateful for any advice. I am not a computer geek, I am a granny, although perhaps more computer literate than most!
I would be really grateful if someone could give me simple instructions how to move my apps into a better place so I can use them. All the previously downloaded apps are fine!
Thanks
Pam
