sky tv -awful customer service

My parents have been sky customers for over 15 years paying silly money for tv.
Sadly the current sky box is failing and I rang up today to sort a replacement.
This took over 1 hour and still not resoled, on an expensive 0844 number.
They offered a new box for just under £300. My parents are out of contract so I asked if they could sign up for a new contract and get the same deal as a new customer? But no.
They offered to send an engineer out fot £65 until I asked to cancel the package.
I then got put through to retentions who kept puttong me on hold for 10 mins a time.
Eventually they insisted on sending an engineer for £15 but then gave a £75 discount on the package over 6 months.
It makes no sense and its so complicated, why can't they do this from the start and why do they rip customers of with pricey 0844 numbers.

Have you suggested to your parents that they do an audit of their watching?
A lot of people who signed up with sky back when there were only 4/5 ATV channels (and who were not sport fanatics) find that most, if not all, of what they watch is actually available free on Freesat.
People I know have saved hundreds (thousands between them) by carrying out this exercise and dumping sky. Often they've found they haven't missed anything at all, or sometimes just a couple of programmes per week. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
I think they must be trying to charge you £300 for t he 2tb box as the hd box is normaly free0

We had the same issue with our box which was only 12 months and a few weeks old where we were told we would have to pay for a new box and couldn't get a new one.
We decided that we would be better off buying one on eBay and got a better make and larger for around £45! It has worked perfectly since Day 1!
Not sure if it works for 0844 numbers but have you tried Say No to 0870? It;'s a website that gives you alternative numbers to try that are charged at the cheaper rate? I use it for HSBC etc on my mobile as I get free national calls in my tariff. Just a thoughtI currently manage a Housing Benefit service and have been working in Housing / council tax benefit (as was) since 2001.

I always use Say No To 0870 when there's a call that's charged, i.e 0845 0844 etc. Very useful indeed. Saves you getting charged silly amounts as they always put you on hold no matter what!
From their website:
"Alternatives listed for 0500, 0800, 0808, 0842, 0843, 0844, 0845, 0870, 0871, 0872 and 0873 numbers."0 -
0844 isn't expensive. there is a solution though. cancel the contract. get the other parent to sign up as a new customer via topcashback.co.uk and you will get a brand new system and some decent cashback0

That's what I would do. If it's in the husband's name put it in the wife's name instead as they're counted as a new customer and get the deals and cashback!0 -
Put this number in your mobile 0207 126 7020 its for SKY customers services IN THE UK!!
I had a Sky engineer at my house i told him i hated phoning because always went through to someone i couldn't understand or they couldn't understand me, so he gave me this number and every time i have called i've got a lovely person who can speak clear English and understand every work i say IN THE UK0 -
Our old sky box was on its way out, so we bought a new(er) one from cash generator. All we needed to do then was ring sky and register the box to our account. So we have all the new features and the box cost us about £20! Wasn't going to pay sky the £200 they asked for!"I AM DEATH, NOT TAXES. I TURN UP ONLY ONCE."- Terry Pratchett0
